Nintendo’s Appeal to New Demographics
Nintendo’s newest gaming consoles, the Wii and the DS family (DS, DSi, DS Lite) have enjoyed a phenomenal level of success, and have found new appeal in types of people not normally associated with the video gaming world. Younger children, girls, parents, and even grandparents, have become active gamers once they discover the allure of these new game systems.
These new audiences required new types of games, so as the gamer demographics have been changing, so have the games themselves. Games such as Wii Fit, the Petz series, and Brain Training are some examples of games that do not fit the traditional “video game” mold, but with this new and expanded audience, they have all become best-sellers. All this success has not come at the expense of the tried-and-true games either. Traditional video gamers still flock to the characters they know and love – Zelda, Mario, Metroid — as well as some of the new style games such as Wii Sports.
So, it would appear that literally everyone is a winner in Nintendo’s new world. The core gaming demographic is playing the new versions of the games they have come to love, and the new gamers are developing their new interest with enthusiasm. Senior centers have even been holding Wii Bowling tournaments for the entertainment and recreation of their residents. And, of course, Nintendo is the biggest winner of them all, with the increased demand for and sales of games, consoles, and other accessories.
From our perspective, it’s all good and we would encourage Nintendo to stay on this path. We look forward to seeing what’s coming next!
